Life

It's been a long time since the last post and it is due to I have had to study a lot, but that has made me find several interesting things to post about, in this case about Math. There are many mathematics games and today I like to write about one of the most famous: The game of life.

John Horton Conway a British mathematician was interested in a 1940s ploblem presented by John von Neumann, a Hungarian-American mathematicist and computist who attempted to find a hypothetical machine that could build copies of itself, so he started to work on it and although that machine haven't been done yet, he could find a mathematical representation.

This mathematical model was very complicated and Conway focused on the simplification of the model, his attempt of simplification was successful and was named The Game of Life. The game was published by first time in the October 1970 issue of Scientific American, in Martin Gardner's "Mathematical Games" column and it consists of the following:

The universe of the Game of Life is an infinite two-dimensional orthogonal grid of square cells, each of which is in one of two possible states, alive or dead. Every cell interacts with its eight neighbours, which are the cells that are horizontally, vertically, or diagonally adjacent. At each step in time, the following transitions occur:

• Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, as if caused by under-population.
• Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives on to the next generation.
• Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as if by overcrowding.
• Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell, as if by reproduction.

The initial pattern constitutes the seed of the system. The first generation is created by applying the above rules simultaneously to every cell in the seed—births and deaths occur simultaneously, and the discrete moment at which this happens is sometimes called a tick (in other words, each generation is a pure function of the preceding one). The rules continue to be applied repeatedly to create further generations.

Since its creation the game has been of interest for scientists from many fields including physics, biology, biochemstry, mathematic, economy and computer science because of the surprising ways in which the patterns can evolve.

In computer science it is as so freaking interesting that anything that can be computed algorithmically can be computed within Life, this of course has influenced the culture around computing at the point that the hacker embleme is a representation of a glider formation in the game.

This particurlar formation has got the property of being a spaceship and they travel diagonally across the board, but this is not the only you can do with gliders. Among the things that you can build from gliders are counters, logic gates and one may also build a pattern that acts like a finite state machine connected to two counters. This has the same computational power as a universal Turing machine, so, using the glider, the Game of Life is theoretically as powerful as any computer with unlimited memory and no time constraints: it is Turing complete.

Warnung: this post ist written in Denglisch, I do not like doing it like this either but I'm in level A1 ;)

Following my course learning Deutsch, I've found a couple more tools to work mit, ein für learn more Deutsch und another für practicing:

Aprendealeman.com. Its title is very explicit so I don't have to explain much about this site but I highlight that unlike other sites this offers the audios with pronunciation of the words and with an "understandablecaptable" speed. Apart from this the site also offers tongue-twisters -very useful for pronunciation- and things about Deutsch Kultur, for those who -like me- use the Sprahen to know more about the people who uses it.

Schubert-verlag.de. This site is in Deutsch, it offers exercises of all levels of Deutsch according to the programme levels (A1, A2, B1 ...).

How to print at Biblio

Everyday we learn something! Printing stuff it's not big deal but I think it is good for we nuevos to have a guide with the detailed algorithm of printing things in the cheapest place in our college (today one of my friends prnted about 80 pages and it costs just 24 Bs :D).

Step 0. First of all obviously you have to have some credits in Biblio, if you haven't done it don't panic and read this post.

Step 1. Go to Biblio third floor and walk diagonally to the left and you will find a room with PCs.

Step 2. Use one of the indicated PCs shown in a list on a ticket office that is in the same place.

Step 3. Print the documents as you are used to, then a window will appear and in the box that says .... you gotta write your ID and finally accept -don't worry about the password. You can print as many documents as your credits listen.

Step 4. Go to one of the copiers that are in the same floor outside the room in the magazines section. Put your TAI on the scanner and the machine will start printing your sheets.

Einige Tools für die ID1311

Este martes de Semana 4 primer tengo parcial de ID1311, así que estube buscando herramientas en la web y he aquí algunas que me gustaría compartir con ustedes:

Deutsch mit Optimal A1. Blog de una estudiante de alemán en el cual explica claramente los contenidos más importantes del libro que estamos utilizando además de postear links relacionados y música en alemán.

Siguiendo con este mismo tópico altamente necesario para amenizar el estudio y afinar el oído les dejo el dos links a posts de Taringa con algo de música en alemán: Música alemana : mp3 + letras, Música alemana : Wir sind Helden ( 3 discos ) + letras. Además de estos grupos también pueden escuchar algo de los inicios de Tokio Hotel y si prefieres algo más serio pueden escuchar Rammstein y/o Lacrimosa.

Como complemento para el libro recomiendo la lectura de esta guía de alemán básico hecha también por un taringuero y chequeen otros posts sobre el tema en la comunidad Deutsch Lernen de Taringa.

Semana de las Agrupaciones Estudiantiles at the USB

During this week the different student organizations that make life in our college will be presenting what they do at Auditorios. I visited the following:

ANIMEUSB

If you've seen from Dragon Ball, Bleach, Caballeros del Zodiaco and a long etcétera this is your group! They watch anime and sometimes they do vigils playing video games all night long :)

GUIA - Grupo Universitario de Investigaciones Astronómicas

They make a meeting each week and they discuss topics about austronomic like advances in the field and interesting events in the universe. When the can be seen from here they organize overnights in the campus in order to present such events -very useful to know where you can sleep when the bus left you after a Cervezada xD-.

USB SOLAR

This is a team that is building the second version of a sun-light-powered car that will compete in Australia

3D Arts USB

A new student organization that makes 3D graphics and animations, here is their first short film


CIRQUE USB

Also a new organization, although they weren't officially in the expo they were recruiting on Wednesday. For now they don't have a site but soon they'll get one because I'm in ;)

My Maths notebook has just fell, and yes I'm gonna write about it; on Thursday 3-4 we only saw inequalities but there are a couple of thing that I'd highlight from this class: the first one is the concept of transcendental equation, concept that came up because of this equation from Calculus by Michael Spivack: x + 3^x < 4 and the other is another way of doing inequalities:

First headache

Always that we start a new stage in our academic life we are told that it is going to be really more difficult that what we've been seeing before, in part that's true but do not be afraid because of that. Here in Venezuela it is particularly true if you are going to start studies in a serious university like the Simón but as Adidas "impossible is nothing".

Even so, my first week passed very easy, I had even been relaxed until now, when the first difficulty appears: How to demonstrate that every number is odd or even? Why Cos (x + y) = CosxCosy - SinxSiny? and so on... , this has made me search the web and I found some useful results that I think if you're in a similar situation you may find then useful too, Happy Mathematics!!

First look to the green paths of the USB

If there's some hobbie that has became one of the most practiced by me during the latest month is trekking, and studying in a university in el quinto coño in a mountain is the most suitable place to be. I gotta say that I don't know much about the topic but I've been walking for some of them and I'll do a map before Week 12.

The first trekking past that I visited was in my age in PIO, it was the path that starts at Casa del Empleado and ends near the intersection with the Calle Inglesa. From this travel I can first highlight (starting from Casa del Empleado) Aulas Abiertas, then another path that goes to the back of the dining hall and the main path until  Servicios Generales where the view of the campus is really good and finally you will find a couple of ways: one up that leads to a peladero de chivos and other down that leads to the parking of the buses and the end of the path.

Today I had my first walk since I started with a couple of friends, we started at the Alligator's lagoon -and we did not see even a fucking baba- and then we take the path between this and the Olympic field. The major part of the way you just see trees and more trees but after 40 minutes you might find a view like this

Following the same path you will find another that goes to a house, we didn't take this one but we keep walking by the same path until its end in the right side of the Alligator's lagoon. To get a better idea of what I'm talking about activate the layer Gallery in Google Earth and you will find more information and see the path from above.

For now this is what I know, but I will be "exploring" more, sorry because if the pics but we didn't take any camera with us -you know the way this walks happen xD-, anyway these are excellent images of the same place even considered as that by Google Earth, any suggestions or info about the green paths of the Simón will be well received!! :)

Banking basics

As I, the most people that got the TAI for their first time also was the first account they opened, I've been looking for information about the topic but everything is dispersed, so here's my little guide for TAI/Banking:

TAI inside the USB:

Once you've gotten it, the first thing you have to do is activate it, to do this go to the second floor of CB2 in the first office you find going upstairs by the stairs in front of USBmanía and Banco de Venezuela, make the queue -always queues everywhere!- and tell the girl or boy in the box-office that you want to activate your TAI.

You've already activated it, now you have charge it. Go to Caja in the same building floor 1 at the end of the corridor (if you go downstairs by the same stairs) and then toward the right, do not forget your ID every time that you are going to charge. Another thing that you have to take account is that you must specify the service that you are charging.

In the case of the library charge there's a third step, continue your "tour" at BIBL in an office in the right corner of PB, show your TAI and you'll be already registered at the library system.

TAI as a debit card:

Before starting with the explanation of how to activate it and use the account in Mercantil, I'd like to start with the concept of debit card:

The debit card is a plastic bank card 8.5 x 5.3 cm with a magnetic strip on the back that stores information about data access and the balance of money available to the owner on your account, used to perform active financial (increase the balance), passive (reducing balance) or neutral (no increase or decrease the balance available) operations with it. In this type of card the money used is the debit that the owner has in his bank account and not the bank loan as with credit cards. Some banks make agreements with their clients to enable them to take money found, generating a loan with their respective interests.

Exercise in the search of the 5 of fire

This is part of my non official homework, I gotta write and I have to improve the way I do it, and there's only one way to get it and of course is doing it.

I'm gonna apply a principle that has always been being floating in the air, but I -and I think we amateur writers- almost never use: organize the ideas on the mind before translate them to letters, in fact when I was looking for more information to amplify my knowledge about the topic I found this document by the European Commission and the first chapter is precisely called Think before you write and the easiest way of doing it is starting with simple questions.

In the document they expose the ones they think more important when writing European Commission documents and by extension any document seemed, anyway I rescue three that can be applied for anything you want to write and the fact that they're not many makes it even easier, these questions are:

1. What?: in this part you clarify what is exactly the message that you want to transmit, although it looks really stupid because is an obvious question, you gotta focus on the elaboration of a little scheme that allow you to have a direction and remember all the subtopics or complementary things that you want to add.
2. Why?: motivation is a fundamental part at anything. Another thing that will help you to organize your ideas is think about what you want to get with your text, there are many reasons that will be given in accordance with the kind of text that you're writing. This question this question will direct you inherently to the third one:
3. Who?: This will define your target, I always say that the best way to do something is when you feel pleasure when you do it, but you have to think about the rest too. When writing this is quite important, because it is not the same when writing a scientific essay as when writing a newspaper article, this will also define you the kind of vocabulary and literary resources that you should use.

Another key to write better is reading, this is other thing that has always been being floating but we -and now I can assure it for the most of the people-, but not "reading the Equestrian Gazette"  if not doing real reading exercises. This will help you to get more vocabulary and will offer you good examples of how to write. I'm not a very assiduous reader, I mean, I'm not the kind of person that has read many complete books but I've read the following if you want to start with something more digestible:

• El Príncipe by Nicolás Maquiavelo
